Innovative Strategies for Higher Education in Latin America and Europe: International Collaboration and Regional Development
Between 12-14 November 2012, São Paulo hosted the first bi-regional conference on regional development in Latin America. University associations from Europe and LA joined forces to discuss the changes their higher education institutions face.

Approximately 200 people: University leadership in Latin America (LA) and Europe, national university associations, national and regional authorities and relevant higher education and research agencies, enterprise and local industry representatives
Over the past decades, higher education sectors have expanded and diversified, and higher education has become an important driver for social and economic innovation and development. In a period of intensifying international interconnectivity and economic transition, it is particularly important draw attention to the role of universities in generating knowledge, driving innovation, and tackling global challenges.
This conference was a unique opportunity to merge these issues in a bi-regional perspective, and debate the present changes faced by higher education institutions and systems in Latin American and Europe. The event tressed the relevance of regionalization trends, analysed the current growth in Latin American university systems, and promoted collaboration with emerging countries of the region.
Hosted by four globally engaged universities of São Paulo, it provided excellent opportunity for LA and European university associations and individual institutions to meet, exchange and network.
Discussions focused on:
- Changing roles of Latin American and European universities in society, growth and development
- Presentation of a recent survey on higher education reform in Latin America
- Regionalisation – a strategy for modernisation and sustainable internationalisation
- European and Latin American developments in quality assurance, mobility, doctoral education and research capacity building
- Strategic priorities for Latin America-Europe higher education collaboration
- University partnerships – a shared value between Latin America and Europe
- University-industry partnership in an international perspectives
- University associations and agenda setting: Implications for the EU-Latin America political framework
- Innovation in Brazilian higher education and opportunities for collaboration
